Classics Unit

The word theatre comes from the Greeks. It means the seeing place. It is the place people come to see the truth about life and the social situation."  ~Stella Adler, actress and educator

Sophocles' play Antigone was written around 441 b.c.e., almost 2,500 years ago. And yet, this ancient play continues to be performed around the world, including as part of The Kennedy Center Theater's 2015-2016 season, starring Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche. Shakespeare is the world's most quoted writer in the English language.  Romeo and Juliet is his most frequently taught play. So, what is it that keep audiences, actors, directors, and others back to these plays time and time again? As we study these pieces of drama, we will formulate responses to the following questions:

  • How can an audience recognize a classic character?

  • How can different mediums (art, drama, film, poetry, graphic novels, music, etc.) affect how an audience perceives a text?

  • What makes something a classic?
